Heart Foundation and FH Australia join forces

The Heart Foundation and FH Australia are joining forces to improve understanding, diagnosis and management of Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) and elevated Lp(a) for people and families across Australia.

About FH Australia

FH Australia is a national charity dedicated to improving awareness, understanding, diagnosis and treatment of inherited high cholesterol including Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) and elevated Lp(a) across Australia. We exist to support individuals and families living with inherited high cholesterol, while working to reduce the risk of premature heart disease through early detection and appropriate care. We do this by raising awareness of FH and elevated Lp(a), advocating for timely and equitable access to evidence-based care, providing clear and reliable information and resources, and working with healthcare professionals, policymakers and the community to improve outcomes and reduce preventable heart disease linked to FH.

Partnering for Australians living with inherited high cholesterol

FH Australia and the Heart Foundation are coming together to work with communities across Australia to improve awareness, early detection and care for people and families impacted by Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) and elevated Lp(a).

This partnership marks an important step forward in improving outcomes for people in Australia affected by inherited high cholesterol and reducing the risk of premature and preventable heart disease.

Through this partnership, we aim to:

  • raise awareness of FH and elevated Lp(a) as common but often under-recognised inherited conditions
  • advocate for better access to early diagnosis, evidence-based treatment and ongoing care
  • support and empower people and families impacted by FH or elevated Lp(a) through education, community engagement and health system improvements
Christine Tawtel

Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is the most common treatable genetic cause of heart disease. If detected and treated early, it completely changes an FH patient’s heart health trajectory, significantly reducing cardiovascular risk and returning life expectancy to that of someone without FH. However, in the absence of universal or population-based FH screening in Australia, raising awareness at all levels of society is our best tool - 90% of the people in Australia living with FH, or approximately 90,000 people, are unaware they are living with the condition.

Familial Hypercholesterolaemia and elevated Lp(a) are common inherited conditions that are frequently missed. Working in partnership with FH Australia allows us to lift awareness, support research and strengthen practical support for people and families living with FH. When it’s identified early and managed well, outcomes can change dramatically. We are committed to working alongside the FH community to help make that happen across Australia.
